Evolve 2015 - A huge hit; 3 days of workshops, parties & & IT student-industry interaction in Mumbai

Aptech Computer Education hosted Evolve, a 3-day IT event to connect Aptech students with the IT industry, through live workshops, discussions with top industry professionals, even an Awards night where the work of students as well as the IT industry was honoured.

Evolve Event

Held in Mumbai from 5th to 7th February, 2015, this was the very first edition of Evolve and it was a huge success! The IT industry supported the event in full force, and top professionals were present to provide job and career guidance to Aptech students.

The event was held at the beautiful Retreat Hotel & Convention Centre at Madh Island, Mumbai, a 5-star hotel where Aptech students from all over India stayed for 3 days, learning and partying together.

Industry experts from top brands like Microsoft, Oracle, CCAvenue & UTI spent time with the students & helped them understand the nuances of a career in IT. Many of these top professionals are Aptech alumni themselves, which made the occasion even more special and memorable.

Students spent their days attending workshops & training sessions and having their doubts cleared through discussions with the mentors from the industry. At the end of each day, they got a chance to let their hair down & party hard - at the discotheque within the same hotel.

All in all, Evolve was 3 busy days of student-industry interactions, hands-on learning and lots of fun, all under one roof. Here’s a short recap of each day of this memorable event:

Evolve Event

Day 1: Latest technology insights

The first day at Evolve was all about understanding the latest technologies & career opportunities in IT. Students learnt about the technology used for the biggest government project till date in India - the Aadhar Card. Launched in 2009 to provide a valid proof of identity to every citizen of the country, Aadhar is the largest biometric-based identity system in the world. Aptech students got to understand the different technologies that were used to build this gigantic, robust system. Built completely on Open Source technologies, the Aadhar Card system was implemented with the help of Hadoop, MapReduce, MySQL, Rapid, Pentaho, GridGain, Spring & MongoDB that together make the system flexible yet unbreakable.

Later, senior IT industry professional Sajan Varghese discussed the ‘Internet of Things’. Varghese highlighted the fact that we are already living in a world where over millions of devices are connected to the Internet. We are fast moving towards a future based on Telematics, where technology will track things like how much car insurance premium you should pay, based on the quality of your driving. When out shopping, you will get real-time alerts about available discounts. And many other such exciting developments.

Meanwhile, Sanjivan Shirke, senior VP (IT) & information security officer, UTI, who is also an Aptech alumnus, spoke about the trends & job opportunities within the IT industry. Shirke emphasised the growing demand for trained professionals in Cloud & Big Data.

Following these exciting, insightful sessions, students attended workshops on:

He also pointed out that data explosion, cloud, mobility, and the Internet of Things are the key job opportunities in the IT industry.

Echoing Solomon, Mark D’Souza, director - audience marketing, Microsoft India, explained how social, mobile, analytics & cloud (SMAC) are the next big thing in IT. D’Souza also gave students a view of what it would be to look through Microsoft Hololens, and introduced them to Microsoft’s Imagine Cup. Hololens is the world’s most advanced holographic computing platform that will allow people to interact with high-definition holograms in their physical space. Imagine Cup is Microsoft’s annual global student technology competition that comprises five major technology segments, including software design.

Evolve, meanwhile, also broke the myth of IT geeks. One of the biggest hits at the event was the image-building seminar conducted by Kuiljeit Uppaal, CEO, KREA, who acquainted students with professional etiquette. Students received tips on how to groom themselves, from the right way to shake hands to speaking clearly, to make an impact during interviews & group discussions.
