Tamil Nadu-based Aptech ex-student tells us how he became a respected IT entrepreneur.

Rm. Venkatachalam is a software entrepreneur who runs an IT education centre as well as a software development lab. Based in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, Venkatachalam completed his IT education from Aptech, 15 years ago.

Read his story, in Venkatachalam’s own words:

I joined Aptech in the year 1992. I was impressed with the career guidance provided by the centre counsellor & decided to make my career in IT. I opted for a 2-year Career program called HDSE (Diploma in Software Engineering).
My experience of learning with Aptech was really good. Classes were held strictly as per the curriculum & the faculty was extremely helpful. They supported me in learning ‘business logic’. Their help gave me a lot of confidence. Thanks to that, I am now a partner in a software company that employs over 30 people.

Once a year, Aptech would organize a cultural festival. I stood for elections & was selected the Cultural Secretary at my centre. This experience helped me develop my leadership skills.

I passed out of Aptech in 1994 & decided not to rely on anyone but to get a job with my own efforts.

In fact, I landed my first job 6 months before I even completed my course! I was employed at Firmware India, a Chennai-based company as a Hardware/ Software consultant. My first salary was just Rs. 2500.

Though I already had the technical skills required, I also had to pick up certain qualities by learning on-the-job. I learnt to understand the needs of customers & to satisfy them. I also developed my leadership abilities & communication skills.

After I left that job, I decided to branch out on my own. I started an IT training centre & a software development lab. Both these ventures have been very successful & I have been involved full-time in these for the past 15 years. Over the years, I have had the opportunity of working on several specialized projects - including .NET projects for the medical profession, management portals - and more.
My advice to all young IT aspirants is: Get complete IT education. That’s a surefire
way to become a successful software professional.
